Reporter's Notebook

Making lemonade

A big part of my job involves picking people’s brains – specifically, Southwest Washington’s business brains. You people are smart. Really smart. In this rocky economy, you are proving your smarts over and over, and it’s taking you to good places.

In several interviews lately, people have told me that a slow economy forces us to fix problems we didn’t want to think about before. It forces us to weed out inefficiencies and fluff. It makes us think about making the best use of our resources. It makes us look at how and why we do things. It reveals our strengths. I see this sharpened focus carrying over from the business world into our personal lives as well.

I hear a lot of stories about hard times. But lately, I’ve heard more about Southwest Washington businesses finding ways to outsmart the economy – finding ways to pull through when it seems easier to close up shop. Vancouver planning firm MacKay and Sposito is being strategic about the projects it pursues and careful in its budget cuts as work opportunities slow.

Northwest Builders Resource has added a staff position to help connect local builders with resources and jobs. Manufacturers are opening in-house retail outlets and giving factory workers a hand in process improvements. Salespeople are using communications technology to cut down on travel costs. Laid-off workers are chasing their dreams and starting their own businesses.

The economy has given us some pretty bad lemons. But you all are making some mighty lemonade. Let us know how you’re rethinking business in this economy.

At Salut!, we’ve been doing a number of things to combat the economy, and the result has been sales that are flat instead of down…a result we’ll gladly accept!

The economy took a down-turn immediately after we had refinanced debt last year, expecting a great year. What a disappointing last half! As a business owner, I was looking forward to finally grabbing sales from what was left of the year, with a big expectation for the last week before Christmas. Then the snowstorm! Sales plummeted. It was a bitter pill to swallow.

But I had been making adjustments to just about every aspect of my business, beginning with the addition of a menu of food items and permanent seating for our tasting events. As of November, customers can come to Salut! and enjoy a glass of wine along with one of 4 appetizer plates, each big enough for two people to share for under $15. The selection includes an antipasto platter, cheese plate, cheese fondue, or a “double dip” plate with two of our fresh dips along with bread and crackers.

We’ve always carried a variety of gourmet food items for baskets and chefs, but now we offer retail-sized items of our appetizer items so customers can also create our delicious plates easily at home for their own events.

We’ve added every-Thursday “mini” wine classes – wine flights of 4 wines set to a changing theme for each week. For just $10, guests can enjoy the flight, plus a ½ hour primer on the topic of the week! For $60 total, a group of 4 can join us for a Thursday class with appetizers from our menu! This new service gives Vancouver a way to enjoy the fun of a night out without the expense of “dinner for four plus wine”.

We’ve changed our wine clubs… our new “Best Wines on Planet Earth” is an internet-based club with links to wine information, recipes, discounts, and our new blog! The Blog we’ve started gives just one more way for our customers to interact with their local wine shop, leaving comments about wines they’ve tried and staying up-to-date with wine information.

Next we’re testing a Sunday Brunch event, with local caterer Muffin Batiste from Le Sous Chef providing a unique array of brunch foods for just $21.99/person on Sunday, February 22nd. If all goes well, we’ll have Sunday Brunch each month, or each week, with Mimosas and Bellinis! More information is available on our website for all of these new programs.

We enjoy making sure our store is ready to serve Vancouver not just the best wines, but the best opportunities to enjoy them as well.
